Rectal Prolapse

When the rectum turns inside out and protrudes.

Most often after years of straining, the wall of the rectum loses its internal attachments and comes out through the anus. Repositioning surgery gives good results.

More Informations

The rectum coming out: an effective repair surgery.

Definition

Rectal prolapse is the rectum protruding through the anus, especially during stools. It is often accompanied by stool or mucus leaks.

Causes

Years of repeated straining, weakening of the pelvic floor with age and childbirths.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination, sometimes while straining.
  • Defecography and sphincter ultrasound to assess the damage.

Treatments

Regularise transit to avoid straining. Complete prolapse is treated by surgery (rectopexy), which puts the rectum back in place. Continence often improves after the operation, with rehabilitation.

Nateen advice

While waiting for rectal prolapse surgery, stool or mucus leaks are common. The Combi brief with tabs, changed regularly with gentle skin cleaning, protects day to day.
